AREDS, which stands for Age-Related Eye Disease Studies, refers to a series of clinical trials sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NEI). These studies focused on investigating the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and the potential impact of nutritional supplements on its development. AREDS2 is a follow-up study that refined the original AREDS formula.

The first study evaluated the effects of high doses of antioxidants and zinc on the progression of AMD and cataracts. The follow-up study focused on improving the original formula by replacing beta-carotene with lutein and zeaxanthin, and also assessing the role of omega-3 fatty acids.

Both studies demonstrated that certain vitamin and mineral supplements, particularly the AREDS2 formula, could slow the progression from intermediate to advanced AMD in individuals with existing AMD. 

The AREDS2 formula, particularly the combination of lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamins C and E, zinc, and copper, has been shown to slow the progression of AMD, including geographic atrophy, a severe form of dry AMD, according to a study published in Ophthalmology in July 2024 and the National Eye Institute.

The original AREDS formula contained beta-carotene, which was found to increase lung cancer risk in smokers. The AREDS2 formula replaced it with lutein and zeaxanthin. Our formula contains beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin.

We have kept beta-carotene (Vitamin A) in our formula. Beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, plays a vital role in maintaining eye health. It helps with vision, particularly in low light conditions, and can help prevent conditions like night blindness, dry eyes and age-related macular degeneration. Additionally, it can protect the eyes from damage caused by light exposure and oxidative stress.*

Although high doses of beta-carotene supplements, which the body converts to vitamin A, have been linked to an increased risk of lung cancer in people who smoke or have a history of smoking, this increased risk has been observed in studies involving doses of 20mg and higher. (Note:However, beta-carotene obtained through natural food sources, like fruits and vegetables, is not associated with an increased risk of lung cancer). 

Our formula contains only 100mcg of beta-carotene. The recommended daily allowance for vitamin A for men is 900 mcg (micrograms), and 700 mcg for women. As you can see, 100 mcg is a relatively small amount of vitamin A and is unlikely to be harmful.

It's important to note that these supplements don't prevent AMD or reverse existing damage, but rather may help slow its progression, according to the National Eye Institute (NEI).
